Have you ever thought about what we’re on the Internet for?

Surely most will say that for leisure and fun. Others will ensure that it is necessary to complete their daily tasks. However for entrepreneurs and freelancers, the internet is a place where they can close deals and make business.

Visibility is the starting point for generating contacts and then customers. Clients help businesses grow and bring in more customers.

So it’s worth improving your visibility as a photographer, don’t you think?  In this post I explain what visibility is and how to easily increase it.

Visibility for photographers, what’s this?

If we are talking about digital marketing, visibility is the ability of brands, companies or professionals to reach and be seen by as many users as possible.

In addition, the aim is for these users to be within the target audience. That is to say, that they belong to the group of people that we believe can hire us.

So if we can reach more people, we’ll have a better chance of contacting potential customers.

Let’s see how we can do it.

Organic vs paid

Your visibility can be organic (free) or paid. The first one includes all the actions you can do and share for free through your networks. For example Instagram posts, Facebook posts, Youtube videos, blogging, etc.

On the other hand we have paid visibility. By this we mean advertising campaigns that we can do through Google ads, Facebook ads (which includes Instagram) and many other platforms that offer it.

You may be wondering which one is best for you.

Well, that depends. You have to learn what each one is for and how you can include it in your strategy.

I give you some basic ideas about this:

Organic: is the visibility you get by sharing any photo, video, article, tweet or content on your social networks. The reach of these posts depends on the number of followers you have and the number of times it is seen, commented or shared.

It’s often said that it’s free, but you have to take into account the time it takes you to plan and produce the content you share. In the end time is money, isn’t it?

Paid: is the visibility you get when you pay for what you publish to be seen by more people than you have within your networks. The reach depends on how much money you invest.

The great advantage of paid visibility is that you can always segment who will see your ad. This tool is very powerful because you can direct your communications to the people who are most interested in hiring you. The people that really matter.

Okay, that sounds great. But visibility for what?

Advantages of having a good visibility

Have you ever wondered why influencers make so much money?

It’s all about visibility. They can reach millions of people with a publication. This is very useful when you think of it as a sales tool.

Applying it to small entrepreneurs or freelancers drastically improves the attraction of new prospects (potential clients) and then helps turn them into clients.

So the first thing to keep in mind is not only to get likes and followers, but what do you want them to do after interacting with your content. For example: go to your website, fill in a contact form, make a purchase, ask for a quote, etc.

You are probably wondering if this is for you.

Short answer: Yes, it is.

My talent is enough, right?

I’m sorry to tell you that in most cases it’s not. There are millions of people doing the same thing as you. Some of them have knowledge of marketing tools and sales strategies.

That’s why you see some very successful photographers on social networks who may not be very talented. They are not excellent photographers but they are excellent at selling their work.

That’s where you have to go. You have to learn to sell your work.

At this point you may think it’s very complicated, but in reality it’s not. Here are some tips you can apply to start gaining visibility and turn strangers into customers.

Stop using a sledgehammer to crack a nut!

Leave the excuses and get to work! Having influence in a niche and living from photography is possible. You can start by:

1. Having a plan

This has to be the first point you consider. If you don’t know where you’re going, you’re hardly going to make it.

Having a plan means understanding your goals and creating a plan to achieve them. There is no perfect way to do it, but when you start, 2 things can happen:

Your get it right: then it’s been worth it and you’ve achieved your goals in full or in part.

You don’t get it right: you learn that what you’ve done so far doesn’t work and that maybe you need to change something to make it more effective.

2. Don’t stop learning

The world is moving fast and things that worked one year ago may not be valid today.

If you really want to be successful, you must acquire new techniques and knowledge that you can apply to your strategies.

Don’t settle for it. Keep going!

3. Experimentation

I told you before that there is no magic formula that works always and for everyone. Every professional must find a way to achieve his/her goals.

However, there are ways to speed up the process. Experimentation works pretty well on just about everything.

Try new things. Experiment, analyze and correct your mistakes. But most of all, don’t stop trying.

Use a shortcut

Do you want to increase your visibility?

You must already have clear what you need to improve your visibility. However, I’ve saved the best for the end.

The ModelManagement.com community has more than one million models and industry professionals. Also, more than 205k followers on Instagram, another 250k on Facebook and a few thousand more on other networks.

By creating your profile on the platform and being active, you have a chance to impact more than 2.7M people who are interested in the audiovisual industry and who work actively.

In addition, by having your social networks and websites linked to your Modelmanagement.com account, you increase traffic, followers and likes.

But most important, you are in contact with other professionals like you with whom you can create projects.

What do you think about the visibility for photographers? Would you like to learn sales strategies for photographers and freelancers? Let me know what you are interested in.

[:en]We have always thought that to be a successful photographer we had to be talented, have a good eye, and buy expensive gear.

This, in most cases, is not true.

Great photographers are known for being consistent and working every day to improve their processes. So it all comes down to having a proper workflow.

This is even more important when we work with models. That’s why we have created this practical guide for you to improve your photographic workflow with models.

Where to find models?

Whether we are talking about fashion, portrait, or editorial photography, you are going to need models.

By accessing the Model Search, you have access to over 1 million models worldwide.

In addition, you have the option of using geographical filters, by category, discipline, type of model, and many more.

Once you find the models you like, you can visit their profiles to see portfolio photos or recommendations. You can also send them direct messages, view their social networks, invite them to participate in a casting, or add them to your own model directory.

Create your own model directory

We always need different models depending on the type of project. So having them organized by category is necessary.

In many cases, I come across great models who may not fit into the project I have at the moment, but who would fit into others.

Creating lists of models allows you to access and connect with them when needed.

Create a casting for each project

Photographers know that the right model can make the photos stand out. That’s why it’s important to choose wisely.

The best photographers are known for their careful selection of models. Not all projects are the same, so not everyone fits in the same way.

Publish a casting per project and manage them easily from the “Casting Manager tool”. Select your favorites and place them in lists that you can share with your team members or clients.

Make a live video casting

Those of you who have worked with agency models know that they are chosen for their composite card. In the best case, they will send you a video presentation.

These photos and videos are updated from time to time, but as a rule, it doesn’t happen very often.

I have come across models who have just arrived from holidays and are (over-)tanned or who have changed their look in the last few weeks and had not notified their agency.

To avoid this, invite the models you are interested in for your project to do a live video casting.

Book models online

Hiring a model has never been easier. Forget about long processes and high commissions.

If your project is paid, once you have decided on the model you want to work with, all you have to do is book it.

Sign a smart contract

Ensuring the use you can make of the photos or videos is very important.

Regardless of whether your project is a TFP collaboration or a paid one, you have to sign a contract.

In many cases, I’ve been surprised by overconfidence.

The secret to being a successful photographer is being tidy and having the right tools. All this is within your reach.

[:en]Have you ever wondered why photographers get upset with models during a fashion show?

There can be several reasons and if you didn’t have the opportunity to walk the runway at a fashion show, you should read these tips!

Most models already did mistakes and are unaware of it. I’m not going to talk about models falling down in the middle of the catwalk, some high-heels are freakish, some catwalks are slippery, some dresses are too long.

Model falling in a catwalk

Accidents happen and nobody should blame the model for that.

But there are a few things you should know before you step on the catwalk to ensure that you will get the best possible press exposure.

This post will tell you what you need to know to make sure that the pictures the photographers will take of you will be published in magazines, newspapers and press agencies.

The best method to ensure you end up with amazing pictures and great memories is by following these tips:

Pay attention to the rehearsal

Some fashion shows have complicated paths with crossings, turns, and angles. It’s not uncommon that models get lost in the middle of the show! If a model skips a photo podium, she won’t have pictures and photographers will be furious!

Know where the photographer’s podium is

During the rehearsal make sure to see where the photographer’s podium is. Some shows have 2 or 3 podiums. Remember where they are.

If you ignore the photographers, they will still try to call you but there is a chance that pictures of you won’t get published.

Walk in the light

During the rehearsal check if you are walking in the light. If you walk in the shadow, the photos will be dark and might not be salvageable.

Concentrate on your eyes!

Doing the walk looking down or blinking your eyes too much won’t get you published anywhere.

Models in a catwalk

Walk with the rhythm

Every show has a different rhythm. You have to walk the runway at the same speed as the other models. If you are too fast or too slow you will cause problems!

Keep your distance

You have to maintain the same distance from the model in front of you at all times! If you come too close, photographers won’t be able to photograph you! If you stay too far behind you might block the model behind you.

This is the most common mistake models do at fashion shows! And if photographers can’t see you, you won’t have pictures!

Be patient

During fashion shows, photographers can have a process. They can, for example, start first with full-length pictures, and then half-length, details and finish with beauty close-ups.

If the model turns or stops for the pose too far or too close it can mess up the photos.

It’s all about the timing

At some fashion shows, models have to do a stop in front of the photographers. During the rehearsal, someone from the production will tell the models how long the stop should take.

Sometimes the pose should last only 2 seconds and in some cases, it can last 5 seconds. Don’t rush but also don’t overstay your welcome.

If you are too fast, photographers won’t have time to focus and take the picture they need, and if you stay too long you might block the next model.

Have you been in this situation before? How was your experience?

[:en]Have you ever wondered why you don’t have enough customers as a photographer?

Having a career in photography is an expensive and difficult dream to achieve. I’ve found myself, as well as many fellow photographers, looking for alternative sources of income to complete what photography cannot do.

I have worked many hours planning what my next photoshoot would look like, how I would post it to Instagram, then to Facebook, Linkedin and every other network possible.

Posting on Instagram

I’ve also spent hours deciding if I need a website or an online portfolio and how it should look, what it should have and how it should work.

The only thing I achieved was to feel unmotivated and overcome by a situation I could not control.

Luckily, I have learned from all the mistakes I’ve made as a photographer and I can now say that photography is a possible dream. That’s why I want to show you the little things you do every day that are killing your business and how to solve them.

Are you brave enough?

The first factor that prevents us from advancing in photography and ends up killing our business is fear.

Fear of what?

Failure.
Of what they’ll say.
Not being good enough.
Of facing unknown situations.

You must have the ability and the strength to understand that success in this industry depends on hard work, not just talent.

Learning from your competitors

If the marketing has taught me anything, it’s that you should keep your competitors very close to you.

Analyzing the competition is the most profitable thing you can do for your business. Think that they, as well as you, are pursuing the same goal and perhaps they have already found a way to solve things that you have not yet been able to.

In a dynamic market like the one we live in, it’s important to be aware of what’s going on with customers, but also what’s going on with those who are competing for those customers just like you.

What can we learn from our competitors?

Keep in mind that you must be honest with yourself when comparing your products or services with those of your competitors. But in doing so, you can realize:

    • Things that you are stronger and better at than they are.
    • Things you are not better than them but can improve on.
    • What they do and what works for them (maybe you can come up with ideas for your own processes)
    • Processes that they do and are more effective than yours.
    • Inspiration to do things in a different way you are used to.
    • What are the trends in the market and adjust your own strategy.

Being aware of what your competitors are doing will allow you to better understand the industry and know yourself better. This will ultimately lead you to make better strategic decisions and take your business further.

As Sun Tzu said in The Art of War:

“If you know the enemy and you know yourself, do not fear the outcome of a hundred battles”

You are not focused enough

In my previous post, You’ll never be a great photographer if you make these six mistakes, I mentioned that one of the common mistakes that we photographers make is “doing everything”.

Photography essentially works the same way for any style. However, we can’t fall into the trap of believing that we can do any kind of photography.

Why?

Don’t take it personally, it’s not about you and your skills, which are probably enough. It’s more about the difficulty of selling so many services, which are different from each other and are aimed at different customers.

Neon sign

Photography does not sell equally to all types of customers. An advertising project will be hired by a creative director or a producer from an advertising agency, while a wedding will be hired by a private person.

These hints make a big difference in creating your sales strategy. If you have many types of customers, the strength you can have will be divided. It makes more sense to position yourself in one or two types of picture styles and then enhance the others.

Understanding the client

The other fundamental aspect that we photographers forget is the client. We are so focused on improving technique, having better equipment, posting more photos on Instagram, etc, that in understanding what customers need.

Closely linked to this, the most important task we have is to know what the customer wants, when, how and why.

If you manage to discover which are the problems that your client has and how your professional services can help him/her to solve them, you will have found the secret to make him loyal, that is to say, to make him recurrent. In addition, you will be able to get them to recommend you to other people similar to them. So you can’t take this lightly.

Getting away from the client

Most of the actions we take to attract customers actually take them away from us.

We spend time designing the website that we believe will be the best, most functional and that will bring customers and money. However, we usually do it thinking about us and what we would like to see.

But isn’t it the client who will use it?

Is it really useful for our client and does the design and usability that you believe in add value to it?

Every day in my job, I have to look at websites and social network profiles of photographers all over the world. Most of them have pages that are not useful.

Your website must be useful, contain relevant information, show your portfolio and capture the contact information of interested customers.

However, even today there are photographers who don’t have a contact page on their websites. How can a customer contact you if you don’t provide the way to do it?

Also, it is common to see private Instagram profiles. I understand that privacy is a topic these days and there are many people who are becoming aware of this.

But even so, it doesn’t make it easy for clients. They usually go looking for what they need. In my experience, i know they don’t take the time to invite you to connect. After all, there are thousands of photographers like you, so they just have to go to the next one and that’s it.

If your privacy is very important, create a professional profile that you keep within reach of your potential customers and that serves as an entry point to your website, your portfolio and your work style.

In the end, there are many mistakes we make while we are building our business. The important thing is to identify them and learn.

Use the networks in your favor

One of the simplest and most effective things you can do is to link your accounts together. That is to say, that your website has links to your Instagram, Facebook, Youtube, etc. And the same from your social networks to your website.

With this, you make sure you have as many entry points to your portfolio as possible and get customers to spend time viewing your work. In the end, this is what we are looking for with being on the internet, right?

But we won’t stop there. Nowadays we photographers have profiles on different platforms to show our work and get clients. These networks must be attended, updated and linked.

In Modelmanagement.com you have the possibility to contact professionals of the industry interested in making projects. By linking your website or social networks, you make sure that they see your work on the platform but also go to your networks.

This is how you increase your visibility and position yourself in the market.

Don’t wait any longer and link your networks.

What mistakes have you made and have you been taught about your business? Share with me your personal experiences.[:]

[:en]When we talk about photography, we’re also talking about art. The art of creating images. And as in all artistic expressions, it seeks to convey the artist’s vision on a specific subject.

This vision is also understood as personal style, that is to say, the particular way in which each photographer creates his images and what they transmit.

Have you noticed that the best photographers have marked styles that are easy to identify. To execute it, they use light, colours, type of models, retouching or even the photographic technique.

However, bringing this concept to reality is often difficult.

One of the best ways to work as a photographer and get customers is through the development of a style that is eye-catching.

That’s why is important to learn to identify what characterizes your work in order to improve your career. But how? Here are some tips…

What is your personal style?

We all follow the work of many photographers or retouchers. If you think about what excites you with these professionals, you will surely come to the conclusion that their work is consistent in style and you can always identify the creative talent behind the image.

Personal style is what characterizes the photographic work and makes it different from the work of others.

Although we are not aware of this in many cases, it is evident that there are types of images that attract our attention and we feel identified with.

So as photographers we have to develop what we want to communicate and makes us unique in order to better connect with the people we are interested in.

How do I find my personal style?

The basis for having a style is knowing yourself. In the end, it’s about transmitting something that we have inside and we want to tell.

You can start by asking yourself: What inspires me? What is my motivation? What are my goals?

We are all sensitive to images. We will agree that photography manages to transmit emotions, sensations and concepts that would be difficult to communicate in any other way.

Photographers can use this tool to express their point of view on a specific subject.

But we don’t stop there.

We don’t just have the photographic language and the narrative to express ourselves. We also have the colors, the poses or the treatment of the image. Even the type of photography we do, because it is not the same to do documentary photography as landscapes, portraits or fashion.

The image has to say something, otherwise it’s empty. Identifying what you want to say and what you want to achieve will make the process simpler.

Do you see a pattern in your photos?

Maybe you subconsciously add your style to your photos and you don’t know it. Analyze your work and look for elements that are similar. Do you like what you find? Is that what you want to communicate?

If not, don’t worry. It is a long path you have to walk along. In the end you’ll surely find your voice.

Once you determine what inspires you, start looking for references and identify the things they have in common. This will help you define the best way to tell your story.

To copy or not to copy, that’s the question.

I think it’s important to define that there are different types of copying. We can’t be tempted to imitate the work of others just because we don’t have ideas of our own.

Creating images requires work, study, research and experience.

However, being inspired by things others do can be helpful at an early stage in your career. In this sense, it is always important to explain that we have been inspired by others.

Photography is not just theory. In fact, what characterizes the work of great photographers is that they found a way to create images that makes their creative process and production simpler.

Credit: Photographer pictured Jordi Blancafort, model Xin Jie

In other words, they have standardized their shooting process. In this way, they can apply this technique to the creation of images for clients.

So, studying, analyzing and even trying to copy some of the works of great photographers can be useful to learn new techniques and ways of discovering your own style. I do want to emphasize that inspiration is not about copying the work that other people do in order to profit from it, but to apply techniques that attract our attention and that others use, to learn new ways of working.

Remember that photography is learned by studying, but it is mastered by practicing. Take lots of pictures, get inspired and find your style.

But why is it important to have a style?

By having your own style, you will connect with people who are also inspired by what you communicate. In this way, you increase your chances of being hired by the right person.

Also, you’ll work better, because you’ll feel that what you do represents you and you’ll transmit what you’re passionate about.

Style changes. As you learn new techniques or have other kinds of external inputs, you will want to communicate in another way or include new elements in your images.

Finding a style that characterizes you can be a challenge at first. Only by taking pictures and listening to your inner voice you can find that “tone” you want to communicate with.

You will know that you have it when you see your photos and feel that they really represent you.

Let’s take action! 📸

Starting to build your personal style requires hard work and discipline. The first thing you need to be clear about is what you want to transmit.

Then you must find the right models to communicate your idea. In this case, ModelManagement.com offers you the possibility to post a free casting here.

After taking the photos, you should get feedback to help you improve your techniques and fine-tune the way you do photography.

For this you can use the Model Management community, where models and industry professionals can view, comment on and interact with your photos. Sign up for free here.

Do you already have a style of your own? Do you know what inspires you and what you want to communicate? Share with me your thoughts on how you have developed your style.[:]

[:en]You finished your career, bought the camera, the lenses and the computer. However, nothing happens. Nobody calls you to ask you to make a catalog or a session.

So you stand in the queue like thousands of other people who feel passionate about photography and thought knowing how to operate a camera was enough to make a living.

If that’s your case, don’t worry, you’re not alone. 🙂

Like you, many of us have been there.

So, if you’re making any of these mistakes, correct them and start building your career as a professional photographer.

Mistake #1: Not taking pictures every day

We’re all bad when we start! But as with most things, it’s the practical experience that makes you better.

So be sure to practice your craft….lots!

You learn photography by studying, but you master it by practicing. Many times we think that having some photos published in social networks or on a website is enough to attract customers.

The truth is that there’s a lot of competition. Only if you are constant, active and strive, you will be able to open a gap in the industry.

What if I can’t take pictures every day?

The most important thing is that you don’t stop practicing. Being a better photographer is within your reach. Improve your technique, inform yourself of the trends, but above all, do not stop shooting.

Mistake #2: Doing everything

It’s very easy to fall into this trap. The technique works the same for any style of photography. However, they are all very different from each other.

It’s important that you find the photographic style that you like and you’re better at. Then, you should focus on growing in that style.

We usually think that if we offer more services, we will have more work. The truth is that photographic styles are different, so are the clients who might hire you.

It’s not possible to sell a wedding photo shoot in the same way as a catalogue, right?

Concentrating on what you do best will allow you to focus on a single market niche instead of three, five or more.

What if I’m good at doing a lot of styles?

If you’re good at doing several styles, it works the same way. Concentrate on positioning yourself in one of them and then offer other services.

It will be much easier to try to sell a new service to customers who already know you and the way you work.

Mistake #3: Build a single portfolio

Yes, I know! This goes against everything you’ve read, seen and learned about photography. It is well known that the best letter of introduction in front of clients is a good portfolio.

However, we spend our time just planning and thinking how to create it.

Today the content we generate has a fast consumption. When we publish something in Instagram, we have interested people for a couple of hours. Then, they stop seeing, commenting and giving likes.

I think the portfolio is something you never finish building. It’s something that changes.

It is dynamic, just like you, your style and your techniques.

So, don’t focus in building a perfect portfolio. It doesn’t exist. Try to create good pictures very often and then make sure to spread them in your favourite channels (website, social media, newsletters, etc)

Mistake #4: Thinking Instagram is the only solution

In the era of influencers you may think that Instagram is the only solution. Even more so when this social network is focused on photographic and video content.

This social network is a great way to expose your work. In addition, it offers the option of communicating with video, which increases our reach.

But going back to the issue of competition, in order to position ourselves and be relevant in Instagram we have to be committed and very consistent.

The main problem with this is that you have to create a lot of content (photos and videos) to keep people interested. Otherwise they will forget about you and you won’t achieve anything.

Currently there are other ways to contact customers and be hired. Direct contact, mailing and even alternative social networks like Linkedin are very effective.

What if I prefer Instagram?

If Instagram is definitely the channel chosen to communicate with your audience, try to have a plan that helps you to be constant. Whether people notice you and want to collaborate with you depends on the image you transmit.

Mistake #5: You always work with the same models

Getting models for our shootings and projects can be a stressful task. This is why we always shoot with the same people.

It can be useful at the beginning of your career, but if you plan to be a successful photographer, you must work with different models.

Main reason for this is that your audience will be tired of seeing the same person in all of your pictures and also, you will be used to working just in one way.

As photographers we have to adapt ourselves to different situations and people.

All models work in a different way and how you direct them depends on the experience you have and the chemistry between you and them.

How to improve my skills?

You become a better photographer by doing photography. Just that simple.

Make more shootings and gain experience. You can start by posting a free casting here and finding models in your hometown.

Mistake #6: You don’t understand that photography is a business

This is my favorite. Knowing that I was making this mistake was the turning point to understanding photography and my work.

Photography has an artistic component, but it’s also an excellent way to make a living.

As photographers, we have to understand that we are entering a competitive market. So we are affected by everything related to management, accounting, marketing and the market itself.

Understanding that I was not only a photographer, but also a businessman, marked a before and after in my career.

How do I start?

The first thing is that you have to be motivated in some way. In my case, this motivation came when I saw that even though I could take good photos, the clients didn’t arrive.

This made me wonder what I was doing wrong. After a lot of thinking and seeing what others were doing, I understood that you not only had to take good photos, but also know how to sell them.

And this made a difference in my life as a photographer.

Being a successful photographer only depends on your work and effort. It’s something that can be achieved with determination and discipline.

Stop and think if you are committing any of this mistakes and just correct them. Start walking in the right path today. Internet is full of information on how to grow a business, research about it.

If you find this interesting, remember to share it with your community. Also, if you have any question, just leave us a comment or write me a mail.[:]

With the passage of time, we have to understand that great jobs and clients, not only look for people with creativity and a good eye, but also professionals with the ability to execute projects. In order to achieve a good execution, it is necessary to plan and have a clear idea of what is going to be done. Keep in mind that the client is not only investing their money by hiring us and the entire team, but they are also putting something very valuable in your hands, their reputation. This is why mood boards are so important.

Today we will answer what is a mood board and we will give you some tips on how to create them. We guarantee that your photos will improve and you will get more clients.

What Is A Mood Board?

The mood board is a graphic and visual representation that groups concepts and helps to define a line on which to work.

In other words, it is a tool that allows us to put our ideas on a board and when we visualize them we can understand what we need for the project or how we should approach it.

Although it seems simple, it is really useful and sure that after you start using it will be essential in your next shootings.

But, how does all this fit into photography?

Well, as we mentioned at the beginning, big clients are not only looking for creative professionals with a good eye, but they also need people they can trust their investments and the reputation of their companies. That’s where the mood board comes in.

Whether you have too much or too little information, creating mood boards simplifies the creation of concepts.

It also lets us and them know what you’re forgetting, what’s a priority and even what production elements are needed to develop your project.

In addition, it is a tool in which we can put your ideas, style, ways of working and then we can send them to your clients.

How to create a mood board?

Usually in schools, the teachers assign you to make collages with magazine clippings. After trimming, we would glue the clippings onto some cardboard so that we could create an image. A mood board is very similar to this. The first thing you need is to have an idea about what the session will be.

After that, you have to look for inspiration. Exactly the same as at school, you have to look for photos, images, things that inspire you. In addition, you can use text, colors, icons, etc.

You must put all this in an organized way in a document that you can easily access and share with the rest of the team to understand what you want to achieve.

The form of presentation, like the organization, is personal. Everyone finds, understands and is inspired by different things, so in this part, you can be creative.

Things you can’t miss in your mood board

Keep in mind that the mood board should serve as a summary and should contain the essence of what you want to achieve. However, there are some things that are very important and you should keep in mind. I list them for you here:

  •  The concept. The first point is to define the concept of the session. This part is usually the most difficult. Rely on the company’s intention, its objectives or what they want to communicate with the shooting.
  • Type of photoshoot. Is it going to be a portrait, beauty, fashion, studio, outdoor, etc.?
  • The type of model you need. Give details about the type of model you are looking for. Do you need a blonde model, of a specific ethnic group or with some special ability?
  • Color palette. It will help you find not only the clothes and the necessary settings, but it will also allow you to start planning the final look that you will give to the photos when you retouch.

Always keep in mind that the mood board is something you create to help clarify your ideas and those of the rest of the team. So add all the information you consider relevant.

Pro tips to make them rock!

Now that you know what a mood board is, it’s time for us to go and build our own. But first, we need to use some pro tips that we’ve mentioned below:

1. Find inspiration on Pinterest

This website offers thousands of nice pictures to inspire. This is the best platform to do it.

2. Use Canva to create it

We find it an easy tool to use for any type of user. Then save it in PDF format to share it with the rest of the team.

3. Find models on ModelManagement.com

ModelManagement.com has thousands of models worldwide. Post a casting for free and find the right model for your project.

4. Keep it simple!

The best ideas are usually the simplest. The mood board is made to clarify ideas and eliminate the “noise”. Don’t complicate it too much or it will be difficult to do and understand.

5. Explain ideas with text

Explain the concept and leave notes. When we do a photo shooting for a client we are under pressure. Sometimes we can forget things. Having notes that help you remember everything you have to do will keep you on track.

6. Send it before the shooting

If possible, sharing the mood board with the rest of the team a couple of days before is the best option. This way everyone will have time to familiarize themselves with the session. If the client wants, send it to them too.

Are you thinking about starting a new project? Find the perfect models for it!

[:en]If you are starting in photography or if you already have experience, you should know that having a solid portfolio is the best way to reach clients, models and agencies.

However, to build it you face many challenges. The most difficult is usually to get the models. So we have developed a tool that allows you to connect with thousands of them around the world to do paid jobs or collaborations.

Interesting, right?

In this article I’ll explain you how to take advantage of modelmanagement.com‘s platform and build a winning portfolio.

Photographer with a cammera

Family and friends are fine, but …

All photographers have been here at some time. Getting started is difficult and having someone you know in front of the camera makes the process easier. But let’s be honest, this only works for practice, because except for some cases, the photos are not the best and can hardly be added to the portfolio.

Also, if your goal is to be a top photographer, you have to make top pictures. But models and agencies are less likely to want to work with you if you still don’t have that level that you would like to show?

Well, for the models the process is similar. Those who are starting off in the industry and also more experienced models who need photos for their portfolios and social media are exactly the right kind of people to start shooting with.

Are you using social networks to find models?

When you realize that the photos you take should look better, you turn to social networks. You start looking for groups in your city for models, photographers and even those that offer exchanges (TFP) or you go to Instagram in search of people who are interested in the world of modeling and that fit within what you are looking for.

The main problem with this method is that the quality is not usually very good in most groups and Facebook pages, so you will end up taking photos of a person who may not give your portfolio that look you want or just after planning a session, the person does not show up.

In Instagram the main problem is that you must have thousands of followers in order to be attractive. If you don’t have them, usually people don’t even answer.

So what is the alternative?

Model Management community

You should already know that modelmanagement.com is an international community with over 1 million models worldwide.

How does it work?

As a photographer you just have to follow 3 simple steps:

1. Sign up on the website or in the App
2. Publish a casting. Models interested in what you offer will register for your casting
3. Get in touch with the models you like to schedule your session

And why is it cool?

Our casting tool is completely free and allows you to access nearly one million models worldwide. You can filter the search by geographic location, ethnicity, measures, etc. In addition, once they register for the casting, you can contact them directly to discuss the details of the project.

Model Management also has 2 more different subscriptions with even more advantages.

If the quality is good, the models and clients you get will be good too. A solid portfolio makes the difference between being hired or not.

So, create your account and start working with models from your city or worldwide and become a top photographer![:]
