The height question is one that we hear often in the fashion industry and, believe it or not, it is one of the biggest misconceptions stopping lots of potential models from having a successful career. Success in the Modeling Industry is possible, regardless of how tall you are.

Whilst there is no doubt that catwalks require more often taller and slender figures, recently, following the boom of the personality cult, blogs, ‘It girls’ and bloggers, we have seen lots of petite models on the rise – as well as celebrities! – who despite their height have managed to become a tall order in fashion.

Who? You ask. Here we bring you some fabulous, stylish and very inspiring examples.

“Because you are worth it”

Desperately gorgeous petite actress and model Eva Longoria (about 5′ 2″) joined the towering
supermodel heights of Claudia Schiffer (5’11″!) starring – Just like Claudia – in countless of L’Oreal ads

… and it isn’t just L’Oreal that Eva sold us, but lots of other super brands too like: Hanes, Heineken, Magnum, Microsoft’s “I am a PC” campaign as well as campaigns for London Fog.

Wikipedia reports that based on her earnings within June 1, 2009 to June 1, 2010 Longoria was ranked No. 4 on Forbes Prime Time’s 10 Top-Earning Women. Not bad for a petite girl huh?

Whilst there is no doubt that supermodel Rosie Huntington Whiteley is a knockout and that she looks absolutely stunning in all her Agent Provocateur ads, to date, no supermodel can beat Agent Provocateur’s number one viral advert, starring the goddess that is Kylie Minogue (at 5’1″!)

One of the most stylish and cool girls States side – muse to designers and adored by bloggers and the creative fashion/art crowd alike – is the gorgeous blogger/model Olivia Lo. Check out her lookbook.nu (here) and join us at falling in love with her free spirited, experimental and fabulous style!

Olivia makes you crave absolutely everything she wears and the last thing you think of when you see a picture of her is how tall is she? Instead you find yourself saying: I want that!

So, is height as much of an issue to become a model now as it used to be years ago? We think not.

Designers are becoming aware of the impact that highlighting the individuality and personality of their models has, showcasing the characteristics that make them unique and make them shine for who they are.

Success – now more than ever before – can be created if you know your strengths and your limits very well and you take advantage of the incredible free resources that both professional and aspiring have available nowadays.

ModelManagement.com helps both aspiring and established models make the best out of their modeling careers by offering a fantastic platform for exposure, networking and a real industry community, where you can connect with fellow models, photographers, agencies, make-up artists, etc. and get to know the industry too.

“Give a girl the right shoes, and she can conquer the world”

-Marilyn Monroe

They’re difficult to walk in, they’re painful, they’re completely impractical, and because of them you suffered during a fashion show? As a model, being able to walk gracefully in heels of all heights is something you vitally must know how to do.

For that reason we give you some tips on how to make high heels more comfortable…

  • Size Matters #1

Don’t assume that you know your shoe size! Squeezing your feet into tight shoes of any kind will cause blisters. If they’re too big, your foot will slide around awkwardly. Too small and your foot will feel cramped, which will make walking…a pain.

  • Heel First, Then Toe  #2

The easiest way to look like a professional in heels is to put your whole foot down at once, as if you’re wearing flats shoes, agree? First put your heel on the ground, of course followed by your toes. This will make your walk look more natural.

  • Be Conscious of Your Body #3

Engage your abs, relax your hips, keep your shoulders back, and hold your head high, to avoid the most well-known robotics posture that everyone fears. Yes it’s true, it seems almost impossible at first, but we know that eventually you will find your cadence.

  • Make little steps #4

Be careful not to make huge steps. It seems logical for some of you, but instead to make great strides in thinking that we come faster, take your time! Better move slowly, but surely. Don’t try to fight this by taking bigger steps: it doesn’t work.

  • Accidents Happen! #5

Even Naomi Campbell couldn’t help but smile when she failed in the middle of a Vivienne Westwood fashion show in 1993. So if you pick up, needless to stay cloistered at home! Stand-up and be proud of yourself with good laugh. After all, you deserve it!

NOW YOU CAN ROCK THE CATWALK!

Our modeling community is for all types of models, including fashion models, plus size models, alternative models, senior models and the list goes on. Check out these top tips on how to make your model profile look awesome and more importantly attractive to agencies, photographers and clients who are looking to work with a model.

1. Good quality photos

It is not a secret that photographers, agencies and clients, first of all, notice the quality of the pictures. Try to avoid uploading photos made on your phone. If you have a camera or your friend owns one, do not hesitate to use it! One of the easiest ways to do it is to shoot a natural look and use daylight. Choose a plain background, perhaps a wall or a landscape and keep it simple. Important fact to remember, the minimum requirement of uploaded photos on ModelManagement.com is three.

2. Clear photo of your face

Photos in sunglasses or where you have turned your face away from the camera, makes it impossible to see you properly, which is crucial for the person watching the photo. Instead, take a simple portrait of yourself looking directly at the camera.

3. Avoid Selfies or Snapchat filters

Industry members who check your profile do not take selfies or Snapchat filters seriously, so it is better to leave those for your social media accounts.

4. Group shots can be confusing for the client or photographer

Photos with groups of friends is a nice idea, but not when you are a model! Try to upload photos only of yourself, as it makes it easier for people to see exactly the kind of model you are and looks more professional.

5. Night photography

Try to avoid night photography pictures where the light is low, as it is difficult to see how you will look on a real shoot. Daylight photos or studio lighting (if you have shot with a professional photographer) is always the best option!

6. Polaroid

polaroid-example

Polaroids are a classic industry standard for agents and photographers to see how you look without make-up, hair styling and Photoshop. Try to find a plain wall as background and do a neutral face and a pose.

7. Connect your profile to Instagram

Everybody loves looking at models on Instagram and with our community you get the benefit of showing your model photos professionally on your profile and also your daily feed from Instagram all in one place!

model-profile-instagram

That’s it! Now your profile will look attractive and will give you the best chance of being hired. If you need model photos from a professional photographer, be sure to keep your eye on our castings pages, where great photographers are regularly offering TFP (Trade For Prints) shoots. These are joint collaborations between a model and a photographer, where the photographer may try out new techniques with the camera or lighting in exchange for your time as a model, and you get some great photos at the end… a win, win!

Good luck with making your modeling profile look great!

If you are not yet a newcomer or a professional model member of our modeling community, why not join now, it’s free to create your profile and to start applying to model castings.

You only get one shot at making a first impression as a model. It’s invaluable in an industry that’s as competitive as modeling to present yourself as the perfect candidate, the full package! Makeup artists see models in all conditions, sometimes sleep deprived, jet lagged, hungover. As a matter of respect for everyone involved it’s important to remember that the relationship between model and styling team is symbiotic.  You need to keep the canvas well primed so they can create the look!

Skin care

When your appearance is your career, taking care of your body and skin is the only real insurance you have. Beauty starts from the inside out, healthy diet and exercise are of course the key to maintaining a clear complexion.  Eat fresh fruit and take supplements to make sure you are getting all the essential vitamins, there are tons on the market specifically for keeping your skin and hair in good condition.

Although the fashion industry has a long standing love affair with smoking, you can’t forget that it wreaks havoc on your skin, killing off any vitamin C you have and leading to dull gray skin, yellow finger tips and premature aging! The camera sees everything! It’s worth remembering that for the next time you reach for your lighter.

Alcohol and salt make your body retain water, leading to your bloating and swelling. Turning up at a photo shoot after a night of heavy drinking will cause problems for everyone! Remember makeup takes time and money, retouching even more! If you know you have a shoot in the morning, try to drink lots of water, get a good night sleep and be on top form.

Makeup

Makeup is a huge part of this industry. From dramatic catwalk looks, to minimalist beauty styles, makeup plays a major role. It’s also something that shows the artist’s personal style and used correctly makes you look and feel your best. It’s a powerful tool. However, with great power also comes great responsibility! It’s important when meeting perspective employers to show yourself off in all your natural beauty.

Runway-makeup-models
Runway Makeup

If you are going to a photo shoot, skip the morning makeup altogether to save time and effort for the styling team. If you are going to a model management scouting shoot keep makeup to the absolute minimum. A small amount of concealer, a healthy dab of blush and a swipe of mascara is all that’s needed! Keep eyebrows groomed and lips and skin healthy and moisturized. Of course don’t forget to keep all body hair maintained (this goes for men too!) you never know what you’re going to be put into or asked to try on at the last minute.

Don’t forget: take off your makeup every night and let your skin breath!

Hair

Hair is another important part of the overall package. Vital upkeep is regular trims and if you color your hair make sure you get regular treatments both for color maintenance and for overall hair health! If you can’t afford expensive salon treatments don’t forget you can always nourish your hair at home with everyday things you would have in your fridge. The internet is full of sites that can supply you recipes for all different hair types. Everything from olive oil to mashed bananas and beer (a MUST for Catherine Zeta Jones apparently)!

Diet is also hugely important for hair care, fatty acids such as omega 3 found in oily fish are vital to keep your mane in good condition! Your hair will also go through a tough time during the shoots and shows, all the teasing and styling, heated tools and in some cases coloring and extensions will take their toll quickly on your hair.

Try and keep your style simple and versatile, but don’t feel like you have to tone down your personal style. A good hairstyle has made careers, Twiggy’s for example! Her cropped do rocketed her to international fame.  However don’t turn up to a photo shoot or casting with over styled hair, especially go easy on the product (that means you boys!), nothing is worse than spending 20 extra minutes to wash and dry models’ hair!

Clothes

Personal style is a great way to express yourself and standout from the crowd. If you’re attending a casting or scouting shoot, it’s important you make a good and lasting first impression. Listen to what the photographer or scout asks you, in the ModelManagement.com photo sessions we ask the models to wear jeans and bring heels (or sneakers for guys) and leave the rest up to us!

As general rule girls, NEVER LEAVE HOME WITHOUT YOUR HEELS. It’s very important to be prepared when you are meeting potential employers.  Make sure you always have a funky pair of stilettos in your handbag. Designers want to see how you move and walk in heels and if you can’t then you better start learning!

Don’t stress too much about your clothes for a casting, keep it simple, clean, and classy. Don’t show up in your best party dress or a 3 piece suit (unless that’s really what you wear everyday)! Remember the cardinal rule of fashion: when in doubt, always under dress!

At the end of the day, nothing makes you more attractive than confidence, a good attitude and friendly personality. Leave the drama and war paint at home and let your natural beauty carry you through!

We caught up with Nina Melton, Ansgar Werrelmann, Sergio Cattivelli, Alex Saint and Jordi Blancafort, our elaborated official fashion photographers for Fresh Faces 2013. A colourful bouquet of exceptional photographers, forming the perception of beauty and aesthetic.

Jordi Blancafort

Jordi Blancafort has art in his venous. Coming from a family of photographers, the Barcelona based photographer started his artistic career at an incredible young age.

Alex Saint was born in Alicante in 1990. His mother used to be a fashion designer, so the fashion world has been always a natural environment for him.

His parents bought him his first Canon at the age of 13. Alex always used to do the make up to his friends and then take pictures of them, just to play around.

But that game became his passion, and almost ten years later he moved to Barcelona to develop his skills and to study in IDEP Fashion Photography.

Now his passion has become a lifestyle and he works as a freelance portrait & fashion photographer.

Alex creates pictures which absorbs the contemplator with its heaviness of meaning. Gender-roles are a playground and open to interpretation and most over to art.  Fashion plays in here the transforming and instrumental part.

Sergio Cattivelli

Thanks to a passion for lighting and his fine-tuned powers of observation, Sergio creates a perfect balance that gives his compositions an evocative and suggestive three-dimensionality.

His work flows from romantic-idealistic landscapes, bathed in magical and ancestral light to urban architecture that splits and reflects itself over and over again.
