Where to start

First of all, before submitting your photos to magazines, you need to create the concept and produce it. For this, it will be essential to decide on the idea, the photo style, the team you want to work with, and where you want to be featured. Here we gathered some tips:

• Create an idea considering the type of magazine you want to be featured in. It is important that prior to shooting you have an idea or concept that you want to convey. I always like to review my photographic and artistic references and look at magazines that inspire me… For example, if I want to create something more alternative I would focus on magazines like Pap, WRPD, Sicky but if I want to shoot a more traditional style, I will check magazines like L’Officiel, Vanidad, Vogue.
• Decide the photo style you want to achieve. Mark a stylistic line of how you want the shots to be, decide if you want to shoot in digital or analog, how you want the makeup and styling to be… Creating a mood board will help you to put all ideas together.
• Choose your time wisely. Create a team of people who believe in your idea and want to transmit it. The whole team is important, from the makeup artist to the camera assistant. Everyone is important and part of the group and all the team will make your idea come true.

How to submit your editorial to magazines

Once you have the editorial created, edited, and ready to go, this is where perhaps the most complicated process begins. Where can I publish it?

#1 Gather information

The first step would be to get informed. Normally magazines submissions work by email, but on every website you will find a section to know if they can feature your work, what the requirements are, and how to get in touch with their art department. Some websites have already a submissions section, and for others, you will find it in the contact or about us.

#2 Create a PDF to present your work

To submit the pictures to magazines, you will most likely have to create a pdf, where you will need to place the photographs that you select for the publisher. I suggest you give it a special touch through the layout: Add a striking title, an introductory text (if you want to clarify the concept), and the team’s credits.

EXTRA TIP: I always try to make my PDFs look as if they were already laid out for a magazine so that the editor imagines my photos in his magazine. Choose between 2-4 photos per look, and add clothing credits under the caption of each look.

#3 Get in touch with the magazine

Once you have your PDF ready, it is time to get in touch with the magazine. For that, you will need to create a striking email that has the following sections:

• Introduction. Who are you? They need to know about you as a professional.
• Your project. Explain to them what your project is about, and why they should choose you to appear in their magazine, before others.
• The team. Don’t forget to give credit to the team that carried out the session with you.
• Don’t forget that if you want to be featured in a fashion magazine, including information about the clothes will be essential.  Talk about the fashion brands that appear on your editorial, always highlighting the best well-known or those that help your editorial stand out.
• Attach your editorial PDF so they can see your work.

It is important the email you create is generic, but you customize it using the editor’s and magazine’s name.  Let them know that you took the time to write to them specifically.

Another tip that can be very useful is using the Kavyar platform. With it, you can opt for submissions in many magazines. 1. Find references

When you want to become a fashion photographer, it is very important that you do your research. It is interesting to know who have been the great photographers in the history of fashion, the greatest fashion designers of the last times, successful movies that can inspire you, which are the top fashion magazines of the moment, etc. This is important because it all allows you to see what has been done, what has been the evolution of fashion over the years, what trends have been worn and why. It will also help you to see what you like the most and how you can incorporate it into your photographs. In order to create something new, we must take a look at the past.

2. Learn the vocabulary of the industry

Each discipline has its own terminology and colloquial jargon. It is very important that you know what terms are used in your field, how they refer to different concepts of the profession, concepts such as: Go see, Editorial, Test, Campaign, Briefing, Shooting, Setting… And many more concepts that you will learn little by little, but it is important that you know them, apply them and integrate them into your language.

3. Choose your discipline

This is one of the most important steps on how to become a fashion photographer. You have to have in mind that within fashion photography, there are different subjects, disciplines. We can find editorial photography, e-commerce, advertising campaigns, product or still life, and fashion shows.

From my point of view, it is key that you try everything you can. Only then, you will find out what you like, what you don’t like, and what you can incorporate into your work. You can move between all of them and have a wide photographic background and be multidisciplinary, or you can specialize only in one as a professional.

4. Create your personal style

I think one of the things that define an artist the most, whatever the field is, is their style. To find your own style, you must first try everything that crosses your mind, everything that generates curiosity in you, try it. Because you never know what might come out, and that’s wonderful. Experimentation is probably one of the keys to finding your style.

At this point, it will be very useful to have researched in photographic or cinematographic references, to know what look you want to give to your photographs.

5. Practice, practice, and practice

As I said before, you must play, try new things, be in constant learning and improvement. We all know how exciting the days before a shoot can be, but have you ever left a shoot disappointed in some way because you felt it could have gone better than it did? You may look back at the photos and ponder if the lighting could have been brighter/darker or maybe the models could have posed differently. It’s a frustrating feeling that is why we’ve come up with a solution for you so you can use them for your upcoming shoots. In this post, we are going to give you some tips on how to prepare a photoshoot. Take note!

Make the most out of your photoshoot

Here are 4 ways on how to prepare a photoshoot and maximize each shoot you go on or have.

1. Scope out the location beforehand (if you can)

If you are wondering how to prepare a photoshoot and where to start, this is the best way to figure out where you plan to shoot. If you can’t physically go there, there are other options such as having someone from the team visit the spot and take pictures or video call. You can also take a look on Google maps and virtually walk around and pin the places you think are great so when you go there you already have the coordinates to share with everyone.

Because there are models from all around the world on our platform, you can easily carry out these options mentioned above. For example, you have a shoot in France but you won’t be there until the day of the shoot, what do you do? The model in France could check it out for you or a local photographer who sees the casting could help you out.

2. Preparation is key

This seems like a no-brainer but often spontaneous shoots are great but to truly get the most out of a shoot you need to plan most of it to a T. Have you tried meeting up with your art director/stylist or designer before the shoot? It can work tremendously to your advantage. Why should you take time out to do this? Which outfit will we go with first? Which part of the location or props will we start with? When should we take a break?

Whether it’s 2 hours or 7 hours shooting, it can be a little bit frustrating leaving the shoot with thoughts of “Oh we could have done this, or we should have taken advantage of that light or prop!” it’s not always a bad thing because you can use the experience as a lesson for your next shoot, but how do you avoid it? Immerse yourself in all the possibilities. As the photographer, you hold the responsibility to make sure that this vision is executed to a great degree, that also comes with a little bit (okay, a whole lot!) of pressure.

To avoid this, when you get a team together or collaborate with one of our models, you have the opportunity to get another perspective on the concept/idea like we mentioned before but this time the information you get is different because it will be about the story/narrative. How does the model(s) view the character that they’ll be playing in front of the camera? Is there another theme that the make-up artist or stylist gets from the mood board that could be cool to play around with? Does the model have any ideas they would like to contribute?

At the end of the day, getting all of this information is important and as the photographer, you can choose to pass on it, incorporate it or embellish it!

4. Getting full coverage

It’s important that you capture a wide shot, mid-shot, and close-ups on the day of the shooting as well as high-angle, low-angle shots. This is important so that you and the team have a range of photos to showcase on your portfolio or for a campaign/editorial. Depending on your style of photography, if you’re a beauty photographer we know that close-ups are a must but you can go as wide as showing the whole face if you dare to.

Let’s say in this case you’re a fashion photographer and you’re wondering why this tip matters? It’s to save yourself later when submitting to magazines. Imagine you come back from an amazing shoot, out in the desert during sunset and you forgot to take a wide shot. All you have are close-ups and portraits and now the magazine of your dreams is asking for wide-shots for the cover and you don’t have any. What do you do? It’s frankly a disaster put it that way but it’s fixable right, all you have to do is go back to that desert with the same crew and recreate the whole thing! We’re joking, this is why this tip is the last one because it’s the most vital one and whether you’re a landscape/nature or street photographer doing this will help you tell a story about the environment.

How does it work?

“First I had to arrange the shoot with a date and correct time because we were from different time zones so we had to keep that in mind. I sent over a mood board (above) a day before and when the day of the shoot came I logged on, started a session, and entered in Lucy’s unique ID and so it began!”

“The interesting thing about the app is that although I could see Lucy, she couldn’t see me but we chatted anyways, she showed me some of the outfits she had prepared based on the mood board and showed us her location (back garden) where we would be shooting!

This was a great way to know what and where to start so we chose the red dress with the corner of the garden as our first shooting point. Lucy set up her tripod and we started shooting, she was a natural at posing so I didn’t have to direct her too much but as she couldn’t see what the composition looked like, I had to make sure it was on point at all times. Below I will show you the before and after photos from the shoot and they will all be edited differently because we all don’t have the same editing style.”

“The app has a lot of great features as a premium member I was able to change the exposure, temperature, and focus of the camera. In the beginning, I played around with this feature to get the hang of it and it worked wonderfully to my advantage. There’s also a function where you can switch which camera you’d like to use, front or back. I found the front very helpful for portraits. This is a before and after of a selfie shot, we took during the shoot.”

“I love how the photos turned out, I think the magic really happens in the editing process, you can choose to crop, rotate and change it to black and white and the possibilities are endless!”

“We also switched to a second outfit from her layout of clothes and decided to move the tripod to another location, closer to the house to catch the neutral tones.
