Working as a model is like in any other industry job, you have to be consistent and take it seriously. For aspiring models, one of the main concerns is how and where to find modeling opportunities in order to start their career in the modeling industry and what are modeling agencies looking for when seeking new talents.

The most common and simple way to find a job is to look for an agency that represents the model. This way, the agency commits itself to promote the model’s profile in the different castings that come in and for it keeps a 20% commission of the jobs that the model gets.

What are agencies looking for in a model?

The modeling industry has evolved and is becoming more diverse and inclusive. Companies looking for profiles for their ads, photoshoots, or projects want real, unique, different, and talented people and this traslates to what agencies are looking for nowadays.

Barcino Management, our official partner, says that in their case they are looking for “more than models”, as their motto says. All agencies, and in particular Barcino, in order to have the freshest and most current profiles for their clients, always update their database according to the needs they find in their clients’ briefs.

“The industry has evolved, and we agencies are increasingly looking for profiles that are more peculiar, unique, and different because the industry is becoming more inclusive.” says Andrea Gayoso, Director of Barcino Management.

Barcino Management what are modeling agencies looking for

Therefore, models who want to be in the modeling industry and choose to belong to an agency have to keep in mind that what is currently sought after in 2021 is to be different, attract attention, have talent and attitude.

Something very important that agencies value in the profiles they already have in their database is that they must be active, be aware of all the emails and messages sent by the agency, and commit to the offers they accept. “With the new technologies, the client asks more and more from the models. They have to be quick to answer and efficient in sending the necessary material. That’s why we value this very much. We want to have models in our database who are committed to their work and who work hand in hand with us; this is essential to guarantee a good job,” says Andrea Gayoso.

How is the process of creating a modeling casting?

It must always be taken into account that all modeling castings have had a previous process of preparation and organization. In the offer, the client always specifies what kind of profile they are looking for: what the model has to be like physically, what particular characteristics he/she has to have, what is the attitude they are looking for, what he/she will have to do… All these specifications help the agency to find the profiles that are most similar to what the client is looking for.

what are modeling agencies looking for

Afterwards, the agency sends the proposal to models that fit the profile together with the material they will have to submit for the casting. If the model accepts, he/she will have to send all the requested material in the specified period of time and wait if the client chooses him/her.

It is very common not to be chosen in the castings since the client is always looking for a very specific profile with which to explain the storytelling of his project. However, models will always have to block those dates until the agency informs them if they have been chosen or not, or if the production dates are approaching.

Where to find modeling jobs?

Modeling jobs can be found through an agency, but thanks to technology it is now possible to find work on secure digital platforms such as ModelManagement.com. These allow the model to work as their own manager to apply to the offers they like the most.

ModelManagement.com can be an extra for the model as he/she can be in an agency and at the same time on the platform looking for other modeling projects.

Online projects are increasingly present in the Modeling Industry. The online modality has allowed professionals to connect with models from all over the world, increasing the number of results and improving time efficiency in projects.

Jacob Fisher 3D Artist/Animator/Producer at a company called Sparrow-Seven in Washington, DC, USA is an example of a professional who has had a favorable experience doing an online project. Despite not being a photographer or involved in the modeling industry, the online projects have helped him get work done for the company he works for.

online projects in the modeling industry

Sparrow-Seven is a company dedicated to creating real experiences for clients building affinity between brands and consumers. Sparrow-Seven has already used ModelManagement.com for some of the photoshoots they’ve needed, but this time, because of the Covid-19 situation and the project they had in mind, they wanted to get day-to-day photos of models for a machine learning project. So they used the platform to create an online project and get the necessary material.

For the project, they chose 12 models through ModelManagement.com from around the world. The benefits of machine learning having a large number of images is that the more images and the more diversity it collects, the better the software can learn and the better results can be obtained.

“For this project, we were looking for most relaxed, real-world photos of models, instead of the normal posed, studio shots. To accomplish this, we used the ModelManagement.com platform and we were able to go direct to the model.  We could target specific locations, ethnic diversity, skin types, body shapes, hair color, and more.  We had complete control over the selection of models we wanted to use and were able to talk directly to the model throughout the entire process” says Jacob Fisher.

online castings in the modeling industry

Online projects achieve different results, says Jacob Fisher. “We let the model hold the camera in their hands and take control of the process.  This enabled the model to look at their own photos more critically, were they getting the look they wanted, the right light, the right angle, etc. It empowered the model in a new way”.

In addition, being able to scout worldwide gives the professional a great deal of freedom. “There’s a magic in model selection through ModelManagement.com that’s hard to describe. You are looking for something without knowing what it is. But when the entire world is your casting network, it’s pretty easy to find it” says Jacob Fisher.

In online projects, communication between the professional and the model is very important in order to achieve the expected results. ModelManagement.com offers a private messaging service to make communication and connection secure and easy.

Jacob Fisher says he is happy with the result and will use ModelManagement.com again in the future for both online and offline projects.

If you also want your vision to come to life, sign up now as a professional and create the project you have in mind.

May is Mental Health Awareness Month and from ModelManagement.com we wanted to talk about this and encourage people to work on their Mental Health. Specifically, since models are constantly exposed to rejection, we focused on rejection and mental health in the industry.  Because all models have been rejected at least once. Rejection is something common within the modeling industry, but of course, some models, especially aspiring, still take it as a personal problem. Sometimes we don’t take into account how people might get affected by this so we decided to put together some testimonials to talk about it under the hashtag #IWasRejectToo.

What is the Meaning of Success?

First of all, we decided to ask some professional models what was their concept of success, as this is what might lead to think “I am not successful enough to be in it”. Which are the milestones to take to be a successful professional? Different models answer these questions from diverse perspectives and teach us that, at the end, success is personal, and your attitude is essential to become successful.

The Fear of Rejection

Models attend many castings, and they eventually get rejected, so everyone who wants to be part of the modeling industry needs to be aware that is a part of the journey and that it doesn’t define how good you are. For this, we reunited 13 professional models who were rejected too. In this video they share their experiences about being rejected by modeling agencies, casting directors, etc. They also explain how they got over the fear of rejection and give some tips to aspiring models.

Models who appear on the video: Rebecca Pace, Angelika dela Torre, Alejandro Balaguer, Pablo Félix, Alicia Durán, Jamy, Nadin Muñoz, Nini Amerlise, Luana Giorgio, Sura Uysal, Rita Cabassa, Masha Syta, and Shany Black.  The aim of this video is to normalize rejection and encourage aspiring models to not give up.

Rejection on Social Media

We did an Instagram Live with the model and influencer Brigita. Besides having vitiligo, a skin condition in which some patches of skin lose color, she is also a plus-size model. Brigita has dealt with not-so-positive comments on social media, but that has never stopped her from pursuing her modeling career.

How to Stay Motivated When You Feel Like Giving Up?

If you’ve lived a rejection experience, you’ve probably had the feeling like you want to give up. However, as cliché as it might sound, the key is to keep trying. In this video, 12 professional models who were rejected explain how to stay motivated when they feel like giving up.

How to Reject Someone Nicely

Professionals are usually looking for a very specific profile and not everyone fits the characteristics. However, it is not easy to reject someone and tell them they aren’t selected. In this video, we reunited Marzenka Kwintera a professional published photographer; Nini Amerlise, model and agency director, and Heidi Gretel Meza, an HR and Mental Health expert. They will explain how to reject someone nicely and their criteria on how they do it.

Tips to Overcome Rejection

Heidi Gretel Meza, an HR and Mental Health expert, shared with us a few tips to take care of your Mental Health, how you can overcome rejection and stay motivated.

Mindfulness for Models

Self-love and confidence are essential to have a good and positive attitude towards rejection in modeling. Models need to take care of themselves, not just physically, but mentally. For that, we arranged a Mindfulness x Models Live session through Instagram with our ambassador Rita. She answered some of the most popular questions about rejection and mental health, and gave some tips on how to be mentally prepared for a casting experience.

At ModelManagement.com, we believe everyone can be a model, and for that reason, we created these series on Rejection and Mental Health. You must take into account that rejection is part of the industry and you can’t take it too personally. Sometimes you are not what professionals are looking for in a specific project, and that is all. You must keep working hard because someday you will get a YES. And if you want to get ready for that huge opportunity, keep going and try the Model Academy, where we will teach you everything you need to know about the industry.

Covid-19 has affected everyone, and the Fashion and Modeling Industry have changed. However, the sanitary crisis has brought people together to fight digitally against the virus, isolation, and the lack of hope that has been generated. Even though it is impossible to deny the dark side of the events during 2020, it is important to focus on the good things and the opportunities we had in this new paradigm.

Many companies and individuals have come together to raise funds, establish conversations and do digital events during the lockdown. This is the case for Maison Valentino. The creative director of the luxury brand, Pierpaolo Piccoli, created the AW2020 campaign #ValentinoEmpathy, which focused on human connection through empathy during social distancing. The campaign featured artists and friends of the house such as Gwyneth Paltrow, Anwar Hadid and Naomi Campbell and all the pictures were taken at home by a person with whom they were staying and sharing the experience of the lockdown. The result was a collection of portraits and a donation of 1 million euros to the Lazzaro Spallanzani hospital in Rome, which was the main Italian hospital fighting against COVID-19.

Like Valentino, many other luxury brands have donated money to support the construction of hospitals, help with shortage of medical supplies and research projects hoping to help fight against coronavirus.

All the same, it is a fact that the cultural sector has been essential -and still is- to entertain people. Even though almost everything during 2020 has been canceled, the industry found ways to reach people and engage with them. Many Fashion Weeks, such as Shanghai’s and Barcelona’s, were completely digital so people could watch the show from their homes. Mugler’s designer, Casey Cadwallader, decided to do it in a very different way. He created 3D avatars from real models to show the new SS2020 collection in a short film.

Another example of how the Fashion Weeks have adapted to the situation is Haute Couture Fashion Week 2021, which was fully digital. This opened new doors to designers, who can now present their collections in different formats where the spectator can participate. This is the case for Dior, who created a whole movie to present their new Haute Couture collection.

Also, castings in the modeling industry became online and brands, photographers, models and the rest of the personal involved continued working from home developing a new way of expression. Jacquemus, for example, did some online photoshoots with models and celebrities such as Úrsula Corberó and shared them through social media.

On October, the luxury brand also launched a video campaign called “L’ANNÉE 97”, which included some references of the use of hygiene gel.

However, the trend that is increasing in popularity among fashion brands are video games, and digitalization has something to do with it. Taking into account that real life is baffling day by day, people rely more on fiction, and brands -even models- are joining the gaming universe. How? These are a few examples.

Gucci and The Sims

The luxury brand gave away virtual versions of its eco-friendly merchandise in the latest edition of “The Sims.” The brand connected directly with the artists, commissioning digital replicas of a multi-tiered treehouse, sneakers, backpacks, and other accessories from Gucci’s Off the Grid collection.

Balenciaga’s new video game: ‘Afterworld: The Age of Tomorrow’

The creative director of the luxury brand, Demna Gvasalia, decided to show the new AW 2021 collection through its own video game inspired by 2031. You can play for free at their website, you just have to choose an avatar from the Lookbook, which will already be dressed with clothes from the brand, and the game will start from a Balenciaga store.

There you will be able to see other outfits, get inspired, see Gvasalia’s designs, and most of all, get in touch with the future experience of shopping. The video game, which has been developed by Epic Games, the company popular for creating games such as Fornite, has a lot of surprises, so we recommend you to check it out.

The pandemic changed us, the way we perceive things, and also the way we approach them so it has been necessary for the fashion industry to adapt their mechanisms and strategies to the new situation. Is the digital environment and specifically video games going to replace the physical experience in fashion? We will have to see, but with no doubt, it’s an original technique. What do you think?

With Men’s Fashion Week underway, modelmanagement.com thought it was about time to get looking at our favourite male models. And we promise, we promise… We’ll TRY to not get carried away!

Here they are, the male models that caught our eye in 2011!

Our boys!

Jon Kortajarena

At a first glance you will notice Jon K’s pronounced cheek bones and his mesmerising green-eyed stare. But it was not only Jon’s beautiful face that helped him through his long-term modelling work with Tom Ford OR his numerous advertising campaigns with Hugo Boss, Jean-Paul Gaultier, DKNY, David Yurman, Lacoste and H&M in 2011…

Jon has charisma, charm and a great presence together with modest sex appeal. All of which made him perfect for his first film appearance, alongside actor Colin Firth, in ‘A Single Man’ (2009) – a hit move written, directed and most importantly styled by Mr. Tom Ford himself! Check out Jon in the movie:

For S/S 2012 we will see Jon featuring in advertisements for Mavi Jeans, Sergio K as well as in his second move: Alpha.

For being on the scene only a short time, Andrej caused quite a stir in 2011 and left people in a state of gender confusion.

In 2011, he gained credit never imagined before after walking both menswear and womenswear on Jean-Paul Gaultier’s runway. He also walked for John Galliano, Raf Simons, Paul Smith and featured in a Marc by Marc Jacobs campaign.

Andrej even became the face of Dutch underwear brand, Hema, and modelled their “mega push-up bra”.

He has been said to have cheekbones similar to Cindy Crawford’s and a slender body shape with curves in all the right places. Supermodel Kate Moss was even taken back by Andrej and it is reported that when she met him in 2011 she simply whispered, “You’re beautiful.”

Not always considered admirably, Andrej encountered controvery in 2011 for example FHM posted a joke article about him by accident. But in 2012, we want to see more, more, MORE of this beautiful and confident man. Or woman. We will take Andrej however he may choose to represent himself!

Sean O’Pry

Sean has a conventional and handsome look that makes him perfect for all sorts of modelling contracts, he even reminds us gushing girls at modelmanagement.com of an old-fashioned movie star.

In 2011 not only did he model in adverts for Calvin Klein, Versace, Viktor & Rolf, Barney’s Men, as well as Zara, H&M, Gap and Aldo. He appeared in many editorials and magazine covers, as well as walking runway for Versace, Hugo Boss and Michael Kors.
